Meet the New HSHA Board

Those who attended our Annual Meeting and Potluck Supper on April 25th were treated to an enthralling a cappella performance and an intriguing presentation about the work of our neighbor on Walnut Street, Frederick Law Olmsted. The business meeting that followed included reports about neighborhood issues and the induction of a new HSHA Executive Board. This year's board includes a mix of old timers and new faces and will well represent the diverse residents of the High Street area.

We would like to thank outgoing board members Lynne Beasley, Phyllis Thompson Reid, Elaine Shannon and Robb Silva for their past service. As always, all neighbors are invited to attend HSHA Board meetings and we welcome any new issues. Please contact a board member for the location of the next meeting.

Extreme Makeover:
Gateway East and 2 Brookline Place

Everyone agrees that the portion of Route 9 that runs by our neighborhood needs more than a facelift and finally it seems that many in the town are ready to focus their collective attention on the problematic corridor. In recent weeks two groups have been established by the Planning Department to begin a process that will guide the extensive changes expected in the area. The Gateway East Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC), composed of about 25 members, will develop public realm standards for the section of Route 9 between Washington Street and the Boston border. While private development is responsible for the creation of most of the buildings, the exterior of those buildings and the spaces surrounding and connecting those buildings will be used by the public and will have an essential impact on the livability of our neighborhood. It will be the challenge of this committee to develop standards for this public realm and identify conceptual projects and development strategies that are feasible in a location that carries 40,000 cars per day. In short, the goal is to turn Route 9 into more of a boulevard and less of a highway.

The other newly appointed committee is the Design Advisory Team for 2 Brookline Place (2BP DAT). This seven member group will work with the Town and the project developers over the coming weeks to create a safe, appropriate, and hopefully, exciting design for the proposed 115 foot tall biolab. The team will hammer out decisions involving the exterior form and surface of the building as well as deciding siting and open space issues. The DAT will also serve on the CAC so that the total effect of the large project can be coordinated to fit with the overall goals for the area.

While in the past many (not all) in our neighborhood opposed the zoning change that authorized the 2 Brookline Place biolab, all share the overriding concern of bringing about the best solutions possible. To that end we welcome the following residents of the HSHA neighborhood who have been appointed to serve. Please do not hesitate to contact them with comments or concerns about these important endeavors.

In short, the goal is to turn Route 9 into more of a boulevard and less of a highway.

Purple Perennials

Perennial Plant Swap

April showers bring May flowers and in June you can bring a favorite plant from your garden to the HSHA Picnic for a Perennial Plant Swap. If you have an abundance of astilbe, a profusion of periwinkle or an orgy of ornamental grasses, just pot them and bring them to the Picnic to share with your neighbors.

The Highlight is printed several times a year and is distributed on foot or by bicycle by HSHA Board members and their usually willing family members. If you have a comment or contribution contact the editor, Rob Daves, at 617-566-7334 or robdaves@rcn.com.
